P5
A) The product’s impact and effect on the audience
B) Relevant issues of representation
In Hellblade, the developers have used a female as the main character for the storyline. They have made her to be a strong and intelligent character. Ninja Theory did this to promote how equal men and women are. It also represents the diversity between the two genders.
Also, the main character in Hellblade has mental health issues, precisely Psychosis. In a way, it is good thing that the main character has mental health issues in the present day. Mental health is a big deal in the present day and this character can show people what it is like to live with mental health. The characters play as the character, so they go through what the character goes through.
As we can see from the image, the character has a lot of tattoos or facial paint. She is also wearing fairly tacky and worn out clothes. Even from just the clothing, we can tell that the character has been through a lot, most likely many battles. These experiences in the characters life could of most likely caused her psychosis. As the game progresses, her psychosis gets worse, showing how these catastrophic events can cause it to worsen.
From this screenshot from Hellblade gameplay, we can see how the world is set. For example, everything is built with wood and none of it is electronic, in fact there is no electric to be seen in sight. Also, there is a lot of stone which is typical of a viking set.
As this game is set in the Viking era, everything is very basic when it comes to clothing, weaponry and style of character. For example, the character has long hair, mainly in dreadlocks and also is wearing torn clothing. This can show how she is adventurous and how it may be the only clothing she has.
C) Relevant legal and/or ethical issues
When Ninja Theory were developing Hellblade, they thought about their target audience before producing the game. They had to think about many aspects to base their target audience, for example, if they wanted violence, they would have to target the game at a specific target audience as they can't aim it at children as it has violence in it. Children shouldn't be influenced into violence, there are articles online which give evidence how much children can be influenced by games. For example, there was a kid who killed 77 people as he played Call of Duty.

As the main character has a form of mental illness, the developers may only be able to show some of it, not all of it. This may be because it may upset people who have the same illness or similar mental health issues. However, it is a good thing that Hellblade has a form of mental health as it promotes mental health. No other game has done this so Hellblade is a first of its kind.
D) Role of relevant regulatory bodies
When the developers were scripting the game and making it, they had to think about swearing. You have to decide what your target audience is as swearing can affect a game a lot when it comes to PEGI rating. Therefore, the developers of games need to think of their target audience first. This certificate is good for consumers who are looking to buy the game as it shows what is involved in the game, normally stated on the rear of the game case. If children are wanting this game, it allows the parents to see what is involved in the game and then they can make a choice whether to buy it or not. This certificate is essential!
Hellblade has a PEGI 18 title, this is an acceptable certificate for this game hence all of the violence and the mental health issues shown throughout the game. I also believe that it is the right certificate for its typical target audience, as the target audience is around 18-24. It also has a mature 17+ certificate to show that it includes some bad language along with the violence of the PEGI certificate.
